“I was a victim of a series of accidents, as are we all.” -Kurt Vonnegut, The Sirens of Titan
It seems like day 1,599,345 of social distancing at this point. Time truly does fly when you’re having fun. It has been quite a while since I have last updated Raging Rouge. When my blogging business was still in its infancy, I wondered where the road would end. At the time, I couldn’t imagine ever abandoning this project. I wondered how it would happen, and what could possibly be the reason? After all, I can literally blog from wherever I want, whenever I want.
Similar to the origin of Covid-19, the start of the path leading to the “coma” of Raging Rouge is quite traceable. Strangely, the very path of decisions that led to silence on Raging Rouge also led to me receiving a box of toilet paper on my doorstep the day after people started fist-fighting over toilet paper in supermarkets. The entire situation reminded me instantly of Kurt Vonnegut’s masterful book “The Sirens of Titan.” The book was published in 1959 but is absolutely timeless. Hell, you probably have time on your hands, why not buy the book for your Kindle over at Amazon and give it a read?
My increasing distaste for social media was the start of it all. When Raging Rouge was born, 99% of my daily effort was writing. As the realm of “influencers” evolved, my daily task list expanded to include original photography and swatches. In those early days, I absolutely hated the photography and photo editing part of each post. With the limited amount of time I had, and goals to post a certain number of times each week, I found that my ability to write well or make any effort at cleverness was what suffered. Over time I actually grew to enjoy the photography and felt that I even ended up producing some amazing product images! Whether I loved or hated taking and editing photos, it was undeniably a new marketable skill to add to my list.
Social media started off as an extra step that many in the blogging community automated and ignored. Those were such wonderful days, in retrospect! I had a bot that would auto-publish to Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. Instagram required one extra step, but relatively little focus. Over time, more savvy bloggers realized the growing power of social media and actively worked to grow their “followers”, and those of us who were resistant were forced to participate to stay relevant. This little tidbit will blow your mind, but many of the “influencers” who were around from the very beginning had a website and no social media accounts! Today many of the most popular Influencers start with only a social media presence with a pretty picture as the focus and hashtags filling up the writing space.
At first, I enjoyed social media. It was a way to stay in contact with family, friends, and new connections. I especially loved growing relationships with my blogger buddies that I would most likely never meet in person. As using social media grew to fill a larger percentage of my daily activity, I grew increasingly unhappy. I saw very clearly the flaming hoops influencers were jumping through, and simply didn’t want to jump through them myself. Once it was revealed how much of our personal data was being farmed and used to manipulate social media consumers, I saw the entire space for what it was. Parasitic social media companies are making scads of money on the information users feed them. Influencers make a tiny portion of this, and consumers who think they are harmlessly viewing their feed unaffected are fueling the entire machine, matrix-style. I decided to effectively unplug from social media, which honestly seemed to mean an exit from blogging as well.
I deleted cookies from my devices and blocked both Facebook and Instagram on my laptop. I periodically log in to catch up on my friends and see what they are up to, and then repeat my cookie-purge. Rather than this being a many-times-a-day activity, my social media consumption is more rare. Maybe once a month, or every other month. I decided to be more present and reach out to people individually when I can, rather than share details of my life with a broadcast. When I do log in to Instagram, it seems completely lost on what ads to serve me. Over time I received so much random “sponsored” crap, it was almost comical.
One day semi-recently I was served ads about a game called “Covet Fashion.” I’m going to assume one of my Instagram friends must play, or perhaps many of them. I was bored and curious, so I decided to check it out. The purpose of Covet Fashion is to slowly build an in-game wardrobe, dress your “model” in a fashionable way, and earn more items by winning the votes of other players. As an Influencer with a background in retail and a strong knowledge of how affiliate relationships work, I must say I’m ashamed I didn’t think of this concept myself. The clothing used in the game is a cartoon depiction of items that are very much REAL and can be purchased through affiliate links online. Not only does the game expose you to new fashion whether you are shopping or not, it may very well turn you into a customer and make a % of your purchase as affiliate income. The concept is simple, brilliant, and very entertaining.
After only a few days playing, I was out of in-game funds. The game offers ways to “earn” diamonds to spend on your closet. So I surfed on over to a service called Tapjoy, and scrolled through my options. One option for earning gems was a toilet paper service called “Reel”. Over the years I have made it a point to purchase paper products are made from recycled material, but one area I have been unable to effectively change has been toilet paper. My personal belief is trees should only be used for lumber. Disposable/compostable paper products should be made from something with less environmental impact.

In the early days of this crisis, the Corona virus spread has had a similar butterfly effect. One person exposed to the virus in a market in Wuhan triggered a series of interactions that ultimately led to the death of thousands of people and a global economic collapse. I’ve read many articles at this point where people recall the event that led to their infection. The man who unknowingly shook the hand of someone infected, then ended up sick. The family with one infected member who met for dinner, then lost four family members as a result.
“I was a victim of a series of accidents, as are we all.” is a quote so relevant today, sixty years after it was first penned by Kurt Vonnegut. Don’t let your personal story end as the result of a series of accidents. Wash those hands and stay clear of other people for a while! It’s a very small sacrifice to make for the good of your fellow humans, for your own health, and for the health of your family.
